The play ‘Garotas Mortas’, by the collective Palabreria, is an adaptation of the book of the same name by the Argentine writer Selva Almada, and narrates the investigation of three unresolved femicides, which took place in the 1980s. murdered, reflections on gender violence and feminism from a cinema-theatre language.

about the staging

For the staging of the show, the artists created a theater-cinema language in which the stage and canvas are always in dialogue; That is, the projections are indispensable for the live scene, and the live scene is indispensable for the projection. This aspect is accentuated by the absence of sound in the video. The sound design is performed live by clumsy, under the direction of Dani Nega.

Like the Selva Almada book, the show consists of different narrative records. For each of them, the artists created an audiovisual language, including analog films, archive images, short films, among others. The videos were made by the collective Palabreria in partnership with several audiovisual artists and had the participation of 24 actors and actresses.

From the stories of the three murdered women – Maria Luísa, Andrea and Sarita – the show Garotas Mortas articulates a critical thought about patriarchy in Latin America. The aim is to think about how these specific stories, told by the author in her book, reveal a structural gender violence, with continental dimensions, and that continues to kill thousands of women. The show project was awarded by the 13th edition of the Zé Renato Award from the Municipal Secretary of Culture of the City Hall of São Paulo.
